On the 7th May, Year 5 visited The Millennium Galleries as part of their Ignite Design project to celebrate ‘Come Rain or Shine’. This was the culmination of weeks of design and drama preparation back in school.

The children made time tunnels from willow and boxes as windows into their theme. Y5A’s theme was coal mining in the past and Y5H’s theme was Derek Dooley, the Sheffield footballer. The children bent willow, covered it in cling film and painted appropriate designs on their tunnel. The boxes represented the children’s interpretation of their theme and told the stories of Victorian coal mining and Derek Dooley’s life.

Y5A wrote a poem called ‘Mine shaft’ and performed a soundscape. Y5H wrote an acrostic poem based on the life of Derek Dooley. Both of these were performed at The Millennium Galleries. We are looking forward to watching a performance of ‘Come Rain or Shine’ when the children are in Year 6.
