Herringthorpe Junior School

Engaging hearts and minds in the joy of learning.

  1. Inclusion

Inclusion and SEND

At Herringthorpe Junior School, we offer a nurturing and inclusive learning environment for all pupils, including those with additional special educational needs. Our child-centred approach is the driver of all that we do in ensuring that pupils are well supported, socially, emotionally and academically to achieve their potential. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to learn and overcome challenges at their own pace, with appropriate scaffolds and support in place to ensure they feel safe to step outside of their comfort zone and strive to reach their personal goals.

Our promise

We understand that some children will require additional support during their time at our school. This may vary from support within learning, support in attending school or support for physical/ emotional wellbeing. We recognise that all children are different and the support will not look the same for all children. Our promise is to understand all children as individuals and tailor support to meet their own individual needs, through early identification and following a robust graduated response.

What to do if you have concerns about your child, their learning or their wellbeing

  • Contact your child’s class teacher - your child will spend most of their school day with their teacher so they will have the best knowledge of their needs.
  • If the class teacher shares your concern, an Early Identification of Need form will be completed and advice sought from across our school family.
  • If the concerns persist, the class teacher will speak to a member of the inclusion team who will in turn have a discussion with the teacher and yourself to discuss what extra support can be offered to support your child. If your child has a learning need then an IDP (Individual Development Plan) may be set up.
  • Sometimes additional support may be sought from outside agencies within the Local Authority, enabling us to fulfil our promise and ensure your child has access to personalised support in the right place at the right time.
